Backyard Renovation Ideas That Hold Up in Central Texas

What You Need to Know in 30 Seconds

Build order beats any single upgrade. Anything buried, meaning drainage, conduit, gas, and pool plumbing, goes in before the deck is poured.

Shade is the highest use upgrade here. A covered patio turns a yard you use six weeks a year into one you use six months.

Clay soil decides your landscape. Grading and drainage are invisible line items that protect every visible thing you build.

Know the range. Home Guide put a mid level backyard renovation at $25,000 to $50,000 as of December 2025, and a major one at $100,000 to $150,000.

Book in winter. December through February is the smart window. Crews are open and you finish before the heat.

Renovated Central Texas backyard with a fiberglass pool, covered patio and limestone hardscape

Most backyard renovation ideas online were written for a climate that is not ours. String lights and a new outdoor rug are fine, but they do not fix a yard that bakes at 100 degrees from June through September and cracks open by August.

We install fiberglass pools and outdoor living space across Waco, Temple, Killeen, Belton, Salado, and Rosebud. These are the backyard makeover upgrades that keep earning their cost here, in the order we would build them.

What should you build first, and why does order save money?

Sequence the work before you shop for features. Anything that lives underground goes in before anything that covers it.

Drainage, electrical conduit, gas lines, irrigation sleeves, and pool plumbing all get placed while the ground is open. Cutting a finished patio later to run one lighting circuit is the most avoidable cost in this category.

Think of it like framing a house. Nobody hangs drywall and then decides where the outlets go.

A workable order for a full backyard renovation:

  1. Grading and drainage, so water leaves the yard instead of pooling against the slab
  2. Pool or spa excavation, the biggest machine on site, after a call to 811 two business days ahead
  3. Buried utilities, conduit, gas, irrigation sleeves, and pool lines all at once
  4. Hardscape, decking, patio, and coping poured over a stable base
  5. Structures, pergola, patio cover, or outdoor kitchen anchored into finished hardscape
  6. Softscape, plants, turf, light fixtures, and furniture last

If the plan also touches the house itself, a roofline tie in for a covered patio or a new run of sliding doors, that crosses into home remodeling and needs a contractor licensed for structural work. Keep the two scopes coordinated so the exterior crew is not waiting on framing.

Which backyard renovation ideas actually beat Central Texas heat?

Shade first, always. In this climate a beautiful uncovered patio is a beautiful patio nobody sits on between May and September.

  1. A covered patio or pergola. Home Guide priced basic pergolas at $1,500 to $6,000 in December 2025, custom builds at $4,300 to $9,400, and louvered models at $6,500 to $18,000. A louvered cover angles its slats, so you open it in March and close it in July.
  2. Ceiling fans under the cover. Moving air changes the felt temperature more than shade alone. Run the wiring while the cover is framed, not after.
  3. Evening lighting. Half the usable outdoor hours here happen after sunset in summer. Path, step, and warm accent lighting extend the day. In the water, our LED pool lighting does the same job.

How does clay soil change what you can build?

Central Texas sits on Blackland Prairie clay, which swells when wet and shrinks hard when dry. That movement is why patios crack and why water sits where you do not want it.

Two unglamorous line items protect everything else. HomeGuide put regrading a full backyard at $1,000 to $5,000 and drainage at $1,000 to $4,000 as of December 2025.

  1. Grading and a real drainage plan. Water should move away from the house and away from any slab. French drains, dry creek beds, and correct slope all count.
  2. A properly based hardscape. On Blackland Prairie clay, the base under a patio matters more than the surface on top of it. Cheap prep under expensive pavers fails first.

Which water feature should anchor the yard?

A pool is usually the largest single decision in a backyard renovation, and it drives the layout of everything around it.

  1. A fiberglass pool. A pre manufactured one piece shell, set by crane, installed in weeks rather than months. Our Latham fiberglass pool shapes fit most standard yards, and the smooth surface keeps the chemical load down all summer.
  2. A cocktail or plunge pool for a small backyard. Not every yard needs 30 feet of water. HomeGuide priced a cocktail pool at $15,000 to $35,000 installed, which puts real water inside a mid range budget.
  3. A spa or swim spa. A swim spa gives year round use in a smaller footprint than a pool, at $20,000 to $40,000 installed per HomeGuide.

Decide on tanning ledges, spillovers, and lighting now, since those are molded or plumbed in. The ones worth paying for are in pool features worth adding during installation.

What low maintenance landscaping survives here?

Low maintenance landscaping is not a style preference in Central Texas. It is a water bill.

Native Texas plants with decomposed granite and steel edging beside a limestone patio

Texas A&M AgriLife notes that roughly 25 percent of urban water use goes to landscape irrigation, and about half of the water applied is lost to inefficiency.

  1. Native and adapted plants. The Earth-Kind Plant Selector from AgriLife rates plants 1 to 10 on resource efficiency. Anything scoring 8 or higher is heat tolerant, drought tolerant, and low input for your region.

Use the Earth-Kind list before you shop, not after.

  1. Gravel beds, limestone, and less grass. Trading thirsty lawn for stone, steel edging, artificial turf, and drought tolerant beds cuts water and mowing at once. Keep real grass only where people and pets use it.

What does a backyard renovation cost in 2026?

Costs below come from HomeGuide’s backyard renovation guide, updated December 23, 2025. Central Texas labor runs at or below national averages, but clay prep pushes the hidden lines higher.

Project Typical installed range
Grading, drainage, sprinkler work $500 to $5,000
Decks and patios $1,000 to $11,500 and up
Patio covers and pergolas $1,000 to $18,000
Fencing $1,800 to $17,000
Landscaping $3,000 to $16,000
Outdoor kitchens, fire features, furnishing $1,000 to $35,000
Pools and spas $1,600 to $100,000
Mid level full renovation $25,000 to $50,000
Major full renovation $100,000 to $150,000

Hold back 10 to 20 percent as contingency. On clay, the surprise is almost always underground.

Here is our honest caveat. Not every yard should get a pool. If usable space is under about 400 square feet after setbacks, a covered patio with a spa serves you better than a cramped pool you walk sideways around.

When should you start a Central Texas backyard project?

Book in winter. Top Grass Modern Landscapes, writing on the Austin market in December 2025, put the ideal planning and build window at December through February, ahead of spring demand.

The same holds up the road in Bell and McLennan counties. Crews have availability, permits move faster, and you swim by Memorial Day instead of watching an excavator in August.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a backyard renovation cost?

HomeGuide’s December 2025 guide puts a mid level backyard renovation at $25,000 to $50,000 and a major one at $100,000 to $150,000. Where you land depends mostly on whether the plan includes a pool, how much hardscape you pour, and how much grading and drainage the site needs first.

What is the best backyard renovation for the money in Texas?

Shade, then drainage. A covered patio or pergola turns a yard you avoid all summer into usable space most of the year, at a fraction of a pool. Grading and drainage do not photograph well, but they protect every dollar you spend on hardscape afterward.

Does a backyard renovation add value to your home?

Outdoor living is a strong buyer priority in Texas, and well built features generally support resale where buyers expect them. Few large exterior projects return their full cost dollar for dollar though, so build primarily for how you will use the space.

Do you need a permit for a backyard renovation?

Often yes. Pools, roofed structures, gas lines, and added electrical typically require permits across Central Texas cities, while a freestanding pergola or portable fire pit frequently does not. Many subdivisions also require HOA architectural review for anything visible from a neighboring lot.

How long does a full backyard renovation take?

Plan on months rather than weeks for a full scope. A fiberglass pool install runs a few weeks on site, but permitting, inspections, hardscape curing, and weather stretch the calendar. Rain does not just pause work here. It leaves the clay too wet for equipment for days afterward, so build in a buffer.
